I am writing this blog post for a very dear friend of mine and his amazing girlfriend. They are taking their first trip to the Dominican Republic— How exciting! They are looking to disconnect from the hectic, monotonous life that NYC can bring and plug into the Island life paradise, where the sea and the sky meet in harmony, offering an overload of sunny days, unlimited drinks by the pool, and top-notch culinary adventures! With limited time (only 5 days), Punta Cana immediately came to mind! Ā Punta Cana is an easy travel destination in the Dominican Republic that requires little planning and no car rental. Ideal for those wanting an effortless taste of the Caribbean while still seeing a lot, with some added day trips to an all-inclusive stay. My husband and I travel often to the Dominican Republic and visited Punta Cana last October and had a wonderful time! We, too, only had 5 days and wanted to take a quick little trip. Up next, I will share how to make the most of your time there with an easy-to-follow itinerary covering beaches, culture, cuisine, and adventures. Here’s your ultimate guide to the perfect 5-day Punta Cana itinerary for your first visit.

All-Inclusive Resort Stay in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic.

Punta Cana sits on the eastern tip of the Dominican Republic, where the Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea meet. It's a popular resort area in the Dominican Republic, known for its beautiful white-sand beaches, all-inclusive resorts, and fun water sports.

Table of Contents:

Things to Know Before You Go

  • Best Time to Visit Punta Cana:

The best time to visit Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic is Mid- December to May, with Mid- December to Late March being the high season, so expect higher crowds and prices, and April and May being the shoulder season, ideal for budget travelers or those looking for fewer crowds. Mid-August to November is the low and rainy season. I personally love visiting during this time! The country feels more local with fewer tourists roaming around.

  • What Airport Should You Fly to, To Visit Punta Cana?

You'll want to fly to the Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ).

āœˆļø Fly to Punta Cana International Airport āž”ļø Click for more info and the latest prices.

  • Fill Out Your E-Ticket to Enter/Leave the Dominican Republic

This one is crucial if you want to save time! The E-Ticket is an electronic document you must complete to enter and exit the country. You have to do this before getting in line at the airport to check in for your flight. If you don't have this, the airline crew will NOT let you get in line. So, avoid this and fill it out the night before your flight. After you fill out your form, you'll get a QR code that you can show/scan at the airport. Filling this is free.

šŸ“‹ Fill out your E-Ticket before your flight āž”ļø Click here for the free form.

  • Packing Tips for the Dominican Republic:

The Dominican Republic is an island, and during the wet season, it can get very humid. I recommend packing breathable fabrics. Linen and cotton are your best friends. If you're visiting during the winter months, the weather will still be warm and pleasant. Bring a light jacket for the night, and you'll be fine. I also love packing quick-drying clothing for any hiking and beach day trips. Hat and sun protection are a must!

  • Make Your Bookings / Schedule Transportation Ahead of Time

If you're not renting a car, you can schedule a shuttle service for pick-up/drop-off from the airport to the hotel, or order an Uber. Uber works in Punta Cana and can be more affordable than a taxi. Landing in Punta Cana can be a bit overwhelming, with all the car services asking if you need a ride. If you plan to use any service at the airport on the day off, it is crucial to negotiate a price before getting in and accepting the ride.

Where to Stay in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic

The All-Inclusive vs. The Airbnb or Boutique Hotel

If you're visiting Punta Cana, I highly recommend staying at an all-inclusive resort. Punta Cana is known for its luxurious all-inclusive experience. The coast is lined with all-inclusive resorts, so if you end up booking an Airbnb or boutique hotel, then you'll still have to pay for food and drinks (unless you plan on cooking), and that can come out to about the same price. Staying at an all-inclusive resort in Punta Cana doesn't have to break the bank. You can easily find resorts starting at $100 per night! Now, you get what you pay for, don't forget that. I would average about $300-700 per couple, per night for a decent mid-range stay.

My husband and I have stayed at a handful of all-inclusive resorts in Punta Cana, and our favorite so far has been Secrets Tides Punta Cana | Adults Only Resort.

Modern hotel room with a large bed, earth-toned pillows, and woven wall decor. A sofa and table are near a window with balcony view.

What We Loved About Our Stay at Secrets Tides Punta Cana

  • Newer Resort: All amenities are new, and plumbing is up to date. I've stayed at resorts in the past that are old and in need of renovation. Secrets Tides opened in January 2024, so it's only 2 years old, and you feel modern/up-to-date.

  • Everything is Nearby: Some resorts are so overwhelmingly big that it can take you up to 20 minutes just to walk from the pool to the restaurant, but Secrets Tides is not. We were able to access the beach, pool, bars, and restaurants easily and without getting lost-- gotta love that! Secrets Tides is compact yet feels very open and easy to navigate.

  • The Food: The best restaurants inside an all-inclusive resort in Punta Cana will have to go to Secrets Tides. We had a feast and loved every bit of our experience dining here. Plus, we only needed reservations for one of their spots, but more on that later. The food was incredible and the best we've had in Punta Cana.

I will be basing the following itinerary on a stay at Secrets Tides Punta Cana All-Inclusive

Punta Cana 5-Day Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival and Settling In

After arriving at the Punta Cana International Airport and picking up your bags (I recommend traveling light and with a carry-on only), take a private or shared shuttle to the resort. Secrets Tides is located in Uvero Alto, about a 45-minute drive from the airport.

šŸš• From PUJ Airport to Uvero Alto Private Transfer āž”ļø Click for more info and booking.

ā–Ŗļø Travel Tip: Make sure when booking your transfer, you select your final destinations to be the resorts in Macao or Uvero Alto if you're staying at Secrets Tides. A 1-way private transfer for a group should be $60. Picking you up at the Airport and dropping you off at Secrets Tides. Book this in advance and download WhatsApp so you can communicate with your driver and tour guides during your stay in Punta Cana and the Dominican Republic.

3:00 pm - Check in at Secrets Tides Resort āž”ļø Click here to Book Your Stay

ā–ŖļøTravel Tip: Secrets Tides is part of the Hyatt hotel chain. If you have a Hyatt Credit Card, you'll automatically receive a free upgrade to your stay as a member! Yass!

ā–«ļøTravel Tip: After checking in, make your way to the concierge desk and make dinner reservations to dine at Meraki for hibachi style dining experience. This is the only restaurant at the resort that requires a reservation.

āļøYou can also upgrade your stay to the Exclusive Preferred Club, which gives access to an additional restaurant (Oceana), a separate pool/lounge area, and mid-day hors d'oeuvres.

4:00 pm- Unwind from your travels and have a bite by the beach. Go for a swim at the beach or head on over for a beachfront bite. An excellent restaurant to start your culinary adventure at this all-inclusive resort is Barefoot Grill, a beachside spot offering quick bites like burgers and fries, or freshly baked pizzas. Eat light, though, and save room for dinner. Remember, this is an all-inclusive, all-you-can-eat-and-drink resort, so pace yourself so you can try it all! Some spots are open 24-hours if you get hungry at any point.

Smiling woman in a white shirt holds a burger and fries at a restaurant. Blue booth, framed art, and a champagne glass in the background.

6:00 pm- Watch the sunset from the beach, grab a drink at the lobby bar (Rendezvous), then freshen up for dinner. The lobby bar made us some killer Negronis ;)

8:00 pm- Have dinner at "Tierra" on your first night. Tierra was our favorite restaurant in Secrets Tide! Dress up a little and get fancy. Have a romantic date night!

Modern restaurant interior with wooden walls, green plant decor, yellow chairs at tables, pendant lights, and neatly set dining plates.

Day 2: Soaking-In Punta Cana’s Natural Beauty

Beach Day: On day two, you'll be a little more acclimated to Punta Cana. Become a total beach bum and enjoy the beautiful beach of Uvero Alto. What I love about staying at a beachfront all-inclusive resort is that you can wake up and literally walk straight to the beach! The Dominican Republic has some of the best beaches in the world. Take in your surroundings, go for a swim, eat, drink, and repeat!

ā–ŖļøTravel Tip: Almost all resorts in Punta Cana offer complimentary watersports activities. At Secrets Tides Punta Cana, offers (included with your stay) non-motorized water sports like snorkeling, beach volleyball, aqua aerobics, catamaran sailing, introductory scuba lessons in the pool, paddleboarding, kayaking, and windsurfing on availability. On day two, take advantage of these free activities you can do during your stay in Punta Cana.

Pool Day: Alteratevly if a beach day is not your thing, then you can have a pool day! Manatees offers a swim-up bar. You can start your morning with an espresso martini from Coco CafƩ (they make the best coffee and desserts), take it to go, and chill by the pool. Have a pool day, swimming, and sipping on cocktails all day long.

Hand holding espresso martini near a poolside bar with a thatched roof. Blue sky and palm trees in the background create a tropical vibe.

Craving Adventure Instead? Take the ATV and Buggy Excursion 4x4 in Punta Cana with a water cave visit. This is a great activity to do if you're seeking an adrenaline rush!

For a more relaxed tour on day two, I recommend a Catamaran tour, which includes food, drinks, and snorkeling. āž”ļø Click here for more information and the latest prices.

7:00 pm- Dinner at Meraki. You'll need a reservation to dine at the Hibachi dinner table, as space is limited. This is dinner with a show and so much fun!

Chef in a red uniform cooks at a teppanyaki grill. Steam rises in the restaurant setting. Sauces in bottles are visible.

9:00 pm- Head on over to "Showtime," a theater bar inside Secrets Tides, offering cocktails and nightly entertainment in a theater setting.

10:30 pm- Grab a sweet bite before ending your night at Coco CafƩ. Open 24 hours.

Day 3: Take a Day Trip to Isla Saona (Saona Island)

Isla Saona has one of the most beautiful beaches I have ever seen! Take a day trip to Saona Island on day three. We had the best fried fish in all of the island here, and even got to swim with starfish when visiting the natural pools as part of your package.

8:00 pm- Have dinner at "El Patio."

Cozy restaurant with wooden tables, orange chairs, and yellow walls. Table set with glasses and plates. Warm, inviting ambiance.

Day 4: Cultural Experience and Local Flavor

For day four, I want to take you beyond the stunning beaches (I know it'll be hard to part, but you'll be back!) and into the culture, flavours, and traditions of the Dominican Republic. Since we did not rent a car, the best way to achieve this is with a guided day trip. Here are my favorite day trips from Punta Cana to experience some Dominican culture.

Day 5: Leisure and Departure Preparations

Our last day is more of a "free" day, which you can adjust based on your departure time. Check out from Secrets Tides is at 12 pm. If you need more time, you can always check out and leave your bags at the reception area. Take this day to relax before your flight, enjoy your last beach/pool day, and eat at your favorite spots inside Secrets Tides.

For those with more time, partake in some water sports or go horseback riding on the beach. For an additional charge, you can also treat yourself and book a couples massage at the hotel's spa-- there's no better way of ending a pampering adventure!

Last Thoughts

Punta Cana is an excellent travel destination for those who want a quick escape into paradise. This 5-day Punta Cana Itinerary guides you to a balanced stay combining relaxation, adventure, culture, and cuisine. For me, as a traveler, there is no better way to get to know a new city, even if only for a few days. You can easily customize this schedule to fit your travel style and preferences for the ultimate adventure. If you decide to stay at a different resort, you can still do the same day trips and substitute the dining experiences with those offered at your hotel. I chose Secrets Tides because it's been the best of all the ones I've visited. That said, Secrets Tides caters more to a calm, relaxing stay. If you're looking for a party and extended nightlife, there are other resorts better suited.

Thanks so much for reading! If you've been to Punta Cana or are planning to travel soon, leave a comment below with any questions prior to your trip or things you loved about your trip so other travelers can find new things to do in Punta Cana.

Till Next Time!

Naureen absolutely spoiled us with this itinerary! She guided our choice to choose Punta Cana and thoughtfully put our plans together from there. Her warmth, savviness and careful attention to detail are truly unmatched!

Her tip to fill out the e-ticket before we started the trip was clutch and saved us a lot of stress at the airport. We were also reassured by having the airport transfer booked in advance, especially because we arrived at dusk.

We were absolutely awed when we arrived at Secret Tides. Naureen captured it perfectly in her descriptions and the experience was amazing. The resort was the perfect size - big enough to accommodate other travelers without feeling crowded, but small enough that it didn't…

My dearest Margo, I'm so glad you chose Punta Cana as your destination to unplug and relax! I love the Dominican Republic, and its beaches are some of the best in the world! You can't beat that warm Caribbean water, and yes! Filling out your e-ticket in advance is such a time-saver! :D

We've been to a handful of all-inclusive resorts in Punta Cana, and to this day, I have to say that Secrets Tides has been our favorite due to its manageable size and the quality of its food, drinks, and service. So I am so glad you enjoyed your time there. The oceanfront grill dinner sounds delicious, and the frozen mojitos are perfect to enjoy by the pool,…

With the anticipation for a fun time on the beach side, my girlfriend and I decided to take a much neccasary trip to DR in Punta Cana. We decided to take this trip because of this blog and it's insight on what was to be had for some fun in the sun!

Thanks to Naureen's Itineary, we were able to take in all that the Resort had to offer. After a 45 min shuttle ride from the airport, we gasped at the entrance and how luxurious the hotel was. I couldn't believe how welcoming everyone was. The room was a sight to behold as well, with the shower and king sized bed grabbing most of our attention. We quickly made…

Hi Alain,

Thanks so much for reading my blog! I'm so glad it helped inspire you and your girl to take a mini vacay and enjoy beautiful Punta Cana. We loved our stay at Secrets Tides Punta Cana as well and found the food to be top-notch. The 70's nightly events sound like so much fun! They didn't have them when we visited. What a great addition for some extra nightlife in Punta Cana. And silent disco??? OMG! I need to go back to experience that :D
